  • 🍁 Switzerland in Autumn: what you need to know
  • 🌳 Which trees to look for

Reader, when you think of Autumn, what comes to mind?

Jana: drinking warm apple cinnamon sirop or taking a walk just to crunch through the leaves

Brett: crisp blue skies, perfect hiking weather, and evenings around the campfire

Little Aplin: getting to wear a jacket and boots, spending all day outside

→ You: the perfect time to visit Switzerland!

(Notice we didn't say pumpkin spice latte...although there is a new-ish Starbucks in Interlaken that we haven't been to yet. Brett's too much of a coffee snob, and Jana doesn't even drink coffee! 😉)

Switzerland in Autumn (and Winter)

Will you be traveling to Switzerland in the next few months?

Here are the top things you need to know!

Psst — we know it's only September, but the warm sunny days are ending with mild, cool evenings!

WEATHER & PACKING

Autumn is the season of t-shirt days and sweatshirt evenings. But the higher elevations are starting to be much cooler, and might even get an early dusting of snow.

As always, check the faithful Meteoswiss for the forecast.

TRANSPORTATION

Many forms of mountain transportation close for about 2 weeks of maintenance at some point in the Fall. Don't get stuck during your trip because the top place you want to visit isn't accessible!

P.S. You'll find a handy spreadsheet in each of our itineraries!

HOTELS & RESTAURANTS

Some hotels and restaurants close for 3–4 weeks between the Summer and Winter travel seasons. Don't worry, most of them take turns so that the whole town isn't shut down all at once.

HIKING

The SwissTopo App shows you approximately where there is snow on the ground — super helpful when planing a hike that may or may not have early snow on the trail

Brett's running the Jungfrau Marathon, the world's most beautiful marathon!

And we're followed him along the course.

We're probably running around (literally) too fast to post in live time, but we'll share over the next few days.

There are 535 million trees in Switzerland... which ones deliver the best colors in Autumn?

Larches and birches have yellow leaves.

Maples and beeches have more orange leaves.

Fascinating Switzerland Facts

Behind the Scenes

A brief look at our lives behind the camera and computer.

RUNNING: Go, Brett, Go! He could have picked an easier race for his first marathon!

ENJOYING: Jana finished punch needling her first pillow for our couch! Next project: a matching pillow. And then a rug!

BUYING: A mini freezer. As you might know, the freezers in Swiss fridges are tiny. (About the size of 3 pizza boxes 🤣). So we're buying a mini freezer to stock up on meat, fruit, and veggies when they're on sale.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Did you know we have loads of free resources (spreadsheets, maps, PDFs, etc.)? Find 'em all here.
