5 Tips for Swiss Transportation

While Switzerland reminds you of things like the Sound of Music and Heidi, navigating the Swiss public transportation can feel like Survivor or Shark Tank — but it doesn't have to!

Here are 5 essential tips to ride Swiss public transportation like a pro (and feel more like Maria twirling in the Alps instead of a caveman attempting to make fire during a storm):

1. Know where you are and where you’re going. Whether your itinerary is planned down to the minute (nice work, btw) or if you’d rather fly by the seat of your pants, you will need to know where you’re starting and where you’re going. That may sound obvious (duh), but it’s not that simple. Find out the official name of the transport stop closest to where you’re leaving from (say, the Geneva Airport) and where you wanna go (like a hotel in Grindelwald).
2. Don’t pay for what you don’t need. Switzerland isn’t exactly a backpacker’s paradise, but you shouldn’t pay for something that you don’t need. (Again, sounds obvious…right?) If you have a train pass — which we highly recommend for 99% of travelers — then know which routes it covers. Because it’s literally a waste of money to buy a ticket for a route that is already free, thanks to your train pass.
3. Sit by a screen. We know, you’re on vacation and hoping to keep your eyes off screens! But it’s helpful to sit by an on-board screen when you’re riding the transportation so you can see where you are and notice when you’re almost at your stop.
4. Don’t waste time in line. Ticket offices can be helpful, but the lines are often l-o-n-g. If you have the SBB App, then you can enjoy your entire vacation in Switzerland without ever stepping foot in a ticket office! It’s essentially a ticket machine and timetable in your pocket. (We love technology…when it works — and trust us, the SBB App works!)
5. Don’t get stuck. When you arrive somewhere, go ahead and check how frequently transportation departs. It’s a good idea to see when the final departure of the day is, too. Because nothing is worse than getting stuck somewhere without a ride or having to pay for an expensive Swiss taxi!
6. Bonus: Show up prepared. Once your hotels are booked and your bags are packed, you at least have somewhere to sleep and something to wear. But travel also comes with a whirlwind of other details.
