Hi, Reader!

It was Fall 2024. I was 7 months pregnant, waddling across Basel with my friend.

Every few minutes we wandered into another square dotted with food stalls, craft booths, and amusement rides.

Nope, it wasn't a Christmas Market โ€” it was a Fall Festival!

Fall Events in Switzerland

If you find yourself here in the next few months, see if you can catch one of these Autumn activities:

Fall Festivals | Imagine a Christmas market but with Autumn vibes! The Lozรคrner Mรครคs (Lucerne) and Baseler Herbstmesse (Basel) are popular Fall festivals with the Swiss, including market stalls and food booths and small rides.

โ€‹Thun Water Magic | See a spectacular water and light show every evening in Thun through the month of October. We hope to take Little Aplin here this year!

โ€‹Lucerne Cheese Festival | This is the largest cheese market in Central Switzerland, so be sure to stop by if you want some authentic Swiss cheese!

โ€‹Bern Zibelemรคrit (Onion Market) | Onion everything! From the popular braids to tarts to soups and beyond, this popular market happens every November. And it's on our calendar because I (Jana) really like onions.

โ€‹Truffle Market | Yum, truffles โ€” in Switzerland! Buy, taste, and learn about this delicacy, including a chance to watch the truffle hunting dogs in action.

โ€‹Christmas Markets | Some of these start as early as late-November. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Watch this video for our recommended Swiss Christmas Market itinerary!

Wild Dinners | It's hunting season! Find a local restaurant to dine on regional meat specialities, like boar, chamois, re, and rabbit. Here's our drool-worthy meal last Autumn from Cafe 3692. (I can still remember the divine smell of homemade broth ๐Ÿคค)

Where to see the Fall leaves ๐Ÿ‚

If you're like us, then you take a walk every day in the Fall just to enjoy the red, orange, and yellow leaves. ๐Ÿƒ

(๐Ÿ And to watch your kids crunch, jump, and play in them too!)

Here are some pics โฌ‡๏ธ from the last few Autumns in Switzerland, if you need any inspiration!

Alpabzug = when the cows come down the mountains

Every September or October (depending on the location), the farmers bring the cows down to the valleys for Winter.

The farmers (and often their kids) wear traditional clothes for this descent.

And the cows are decorated with fresh flowers...and sometimes they have a single-legged milking stool on their heads too!

Find a list of Alpabzugs here!
