Facts about Swiss National Day

(aka Switzerland's birthday!)

WHAT: This holiday remembers when 3 cantons (Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden) signed the Federal Charter of 1291 pledging to help each other if they were attacked (particularly from the Habsburgs).

WHEN: They joined forces in 1291, but it wasn't declared a Swiss public holiday until 1993.

HOW: The Swiss celebrate with fireworks, bonfires, lantern parades, flag-throwing, alphorn concerts, traditional music, and yodeling.

(We know Little Aplin will love the music, and hopefully the lanterns too!)

If you will be here on August 1...

  • Find some of the Swiss National Day events here, or ask your hotel/Airbnb host/local tourist office for a local calendar of activities.
  • Many shops and restaurants are closed on this holiday, although you will find some options in the touristy areas (such as train stations).
  • Public transport will operate on August 1, but may have limited local service. All of the touristy sites (think Jungfraujoch and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Mt. Rigi) will be open! Double check the timetable just in case of modifications.

How we're celebrating Swiss National Day

We've lived in Switzerland for 3+ years, yet this is our 5th National Day in Switzerland.

Our plan is to cookout lunch with friends, and then enjoy some of the local festivities.

(And maybe take Little Aplin to his first lantern parade and fireworks show...if he doesn't fall asleep before it begins at 9:00pm!)

The Swiss National Anthem (Swiss Psalm) has only been around since 1961, and has versions in all 4 national languages (German, French, Italian, Romansch).
