Reader, have you ever wished you could sit down with us and pick our brain?

👉I bet your notebook would be filled with questions about train passes and timelines and restaurants.

And I know we could easily fill an hour or two with answers and ideas!

Clearly we cannot sit down with all of our 100k YouTube subscribers or 20k email readers. (Although that sure would be a fun party!)

The next best thing?

Sharing everything we’ve learned through our Guides, videos, and these weekly emails.

Basically, all the answers we’d give you over coffee...just in digital form.

We've called Switzerland our home for 3 years!

And honestly…you’ve been part of all of it.

5 years ago we launched our YouTube channel.

3 years ago we packed up a few suitcases and moved to Interlaken (with Italian passports).

We've lived a lot of life in those 36 months, but here are a few highlights you might find interesting:

  • We are learning German. In order to renew our residency permits in 2028, we have to have to pass a basic German exam (written and spoken). Brett's nearly at that level! And once Little Aplin started sleeping through the night, Jana's brain was ready to start learning again. (She's currently working through these courses.) We practice a few times a week at church, small group, baby activities, with friends, etc.
  • We traveled to every Swiss canton. There are 26 total cantons (regions, or states) in Switzerland. We'd been to many before we moved here, but we finally took trips to the last few in 2025. Most underrated = Glarus.
  • We paid $0.00 to have a baby here. (Well, technically we paid our monthly insurance premiums which covered the costs.) And the entire experience from prenatal care to the hospital birth to the in-home midwife care was fantastic.
  • We're currently house hunting. We honestly love our little 2-bedroom apartment, but we need a dedicated office and guest room. Will we rent? Will we buy? Who knows. But we're not in a hurry so we're choosing contentment and patience until we find the right place for our family.
  • What's next in 2026? We're going on vacation to Italy next week. Our summer research will be close to home (day trips from Interlaken). Brett's running the Jungfrau Marathon in September. Jana wants to walk across Liechtenstein in the Autumn. And we always plan a visit to the USA in November. Since we don't own a car, we might purchase an e-bike.
  • Things we love: It's so family friendly. It's clean. Everything functions well. It's easy to get outside every single day. Public transportation is amazing! Everything is recycled. The second-hand market for kids' stuff is incredible. We have friends who call themselves our "Swiss family" 🥰
  • Things we're annoyed by: Not having a backyard. Food (especially meat) is expensive. Houses aren't cheap. Taxes are complicated (but moreso due to being American citizens, and not so much from living in Switzerland!)
